Carter Rees is a data scientist and AI executive who has spent more than 25 years using quantitative models to solve real-world problems. He has worked as an academic researcher and as an enterprise AI leader. Throughout, he has stayed a builder: he writes code and develops models himself while leading teams that ship production AI.

As Executive AI Advisor to Velastegui Ventures, Carter gives VV’s clients hands-on data science expertise across the whole AI toolkit. That ranges from traditional machine learning, such as predictive modeling, statistical analysis and experimentation, to modern generative AI built on large language models, retrieval-augmented generation and vector search. He helps clients match each business problem to the right approach, whether that is a classic model, a GenAI solution or a combination of the two. He also turns their data into insights that leadership teams can act on and that hold up in production.

Carter currently serves as Senior Vice President of AI Engineering at Storable, the software and payments platform for the self-storage industry, where he leads the company’s AI engineering. He was previously VP of AI/ML at Reputation, where his team delivered five production-scale AI insights products in a single year. Before that, as Head of Machine Learning at Entrata, a leading property-management software platform, he led projects that used AI to automate processes and improve customer experiences. He was named to the inaugural AI Utah 100 as one of the state’s leading AI “Builders.”

Before moving into industry, Carter held academic roles at Brigham Young University and Arizona State University, where he applied statistics and machine learning to the study of human behavior. His peer-reviewed research on social networks and decision-making has been published in journals including Justice Quarterly, Social Science & Medicine and the Journal of Quantitative Criminology.

Carter holds a Ph.D. in Criminology, with a focus on Quantitative Methodology, from the University at Albany, State University of New York.
